OUR DISCUS METHODOLOGY

CONNECT THE MOVEMENT. COMPLETE THE THROW.

Discus development connects balance, directed movement and a long delivery into one coordinated throw. At LTA, we teach how those actions work together—and help you recognize the difference in your own throwing.

HOW WE COACH

UNDERSTAND THE WHOLE THROW.

We teach the complete movement and use targeted drills to support it. Video and athlete feedback help us identify where the connection breaks down. We then choose a clear focus while preserving the parts of the throw that already work.

A difficult entry does not erase an effective delivery. We assess what each phase contributes.

OUR TEACHING EMPHASIS

PUSH. LIFT. TURN.

Our teaching emphasizes a directed push from the supporting leg, coordinated with the sweep leg lifting and turning into the middle. The goal is purposeful travel into a usable landing, with the upper body organized for the delivery that follows.

We adapt coaching to the athlete’s throwing side. These principles describe connected movement, not a requirement to copy one athlete’s exact positions.

WHAT YOU LEARN TO OWN

KNOW WHAT YOU FELT. UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENED.

Develop the awareness to describe your movement, recognize your current focus and prepare for the next attempt. The goal is a throw you understand and can reproduce with growing independence.

HOW THE THROW CONNECTS

FIVE AREAS. ONE COMPLETE THROW.

01

ENTRY

Discus thrower during the entry phase.

Establish balance and coordinate the lower body with the sweep. Keep the throwing arm long and controlled as the movement develops.

02

DRIVE

Discus thrower during the drive phase.

Connect the supporting-leg push with the sweep leg’s lift and turn. Travel into the middle without unnecessary drift or an upper-body pull.

03

POWER POSITION AND TRANSITION

Discus thrower in the power position.

Receive the movement on an active supporting leg. Bring the front foot into place while preserving room for the hips, torso and throwing arm to contribute.

04

DELIVERY AND RELEASE

Discus thrower during delivery and release.

Connect the lower body, front-side support and a long throwing path. Complete the delivery into the sector and regain control inside the circle.

RHYTHM AND TIMING

Build toward delivery. Connect the phases without unnecessary stops, resets or effort spent too early.

HOW WE REVIEW PROGRESS

TECHNIQUE. DISTANCE. CONSISTENCY.

Our discus technical rubric reviews 25 observable qualities across five categories. Coaches assess a six-attempt set rather than selecting only the best-looking throw. Technical execution, legal distance and foul records remain separate so each tells us something useful.

A foul may provide technical evidence, but it does not earn distance credit.
